Free Web Design Tutorials: How to Resize an Image for Your Website Using Gimp

You will need to resize your images before uploading them to your website so that their file size is not so large as to cause errors when using your editor or FTP program. This tutorial will show you how to do so using Gimp.

Gimp is free open source image editing software similar to Adobe Photoshop. It is absolutely free. Download Gimp Now

Step 1: Open Gimp

Here is what you will see when you open Gimp.

Step 2: Select - File > Open

Click the Open button to begin your search for your image.

Step 3: Select the image you wish to resize from your computer then click Open.

Find the file you wish to edit on your computer then click Open.

Your image will apear in the center window.

Step 4: Select - Image > Scale Image

Select Scale Image from the Image tab.

Here is the Scale Image window when opened.

Step 5: Type in your new image size then click scale.

Type in your new image size.
You only need to type in the new width and then the height will scale automatically.
Once your image is the proper size click Scale.

Step 6: Select - File > Save As

Select Save As so that you can rename your resized image.

Step 7: Rename your image and save it to your computer.

Select where you want to save the image to on your computer.
If you want to save it in the same folder you got it from you can skip this step.

Then click Save and you are done.
